(1929- )
   writer
of Czech origin, Milan Kundera was born in Brno. He published poems (L'Homme, vaste jardin, and Monologues, 1957) then an essay on Roman art dedicated to Czech novelist Vladislav Vancura (1960), a play (Le Propriétaire des clefs, 1962), and a lively adaptation of Jacques le Fataliste (Jacques et son maître). His short stories and his first novel, La Plaisanterie (1967), denounced the corruption in his home country and had a wide audience. It was followed by another novel, La Vie est ailleurs (1973). Living in France since 1975, Kundera published La Valse aux adieux (1976), Le Livre du rire et de l'oubli (1979), L'Insoutenable Légèreté de l'être (1984), L'Immortalité (1990), and an essay, L'Art du roman (1986). These works established him as one of the most appreciated representatives of central European literature in the West.
